RBA Rate Rise Puts Household Budgets Back Under Pressure

Borrowers face another reset as inflation keeps the central bank cautious

The Reserve Bank of Australia has lifted the cash rate target by 25 basis points to 4.85%, taking borrowing costs to their highest level since the global financial crisis period and reminding households that the inflation fight is not yet finished.
The 3 November 2026 decision was not unanimous, with six board members voting for the increase and three preferring to leave rates on hold.

The key message from the RBA is that inflation is proving broader and more persistent than previously expected. Its latest statement pointed to higher fuel and commodity prices, domestic capacity pressures, technology-related price pressures linked to AI investment, and the risk that higher inflation expectations become embedded. The central bank now expects inflation to remain above 3% for the coming year and not return to the top of its 2% to 3% target band until late 2027.

For mortgage holders, the practical effect is another affordability test. A 0.25 percentage point increase does not affect every loan in the same way: the impact depends on the loan balance, remaining term, interest type, repayment frequency and whether a lender passes on the full increase. Variable-rate borrowers are usually the first to feel the change, while fixed-rate borrowers may not see an immediate shift but could face a different market when their fixed period ends.

This is a useful moment to review cash flow rather than focus only on the headline cash rate. Households may wish to check whether repayments have already adjusted, whether any offset or redraw balance is being used effectively, and whether future budgets include room for insurance, council rates, utilities and other costs that often move independently of mortgage rates. General tools such as a Home Loan Repayment Calculator can help illustrate how different rates and terms may change estimated repayments, but they are not a quote or approval.

Savers may see some benefit if banks lift deposit rates, but the gap between advertised rates and actual returns can still be significant. Bonus savings accounts often require minimum deposits, limited withdrawals or balance growth, so the headline rate should be read alongside the conditions.

The split vote also matters. It suggests the board recognises both sides of the trade-off: inflation is still too high, but higher rates are already slowing parts of the economy, weighing on housing and household consumption, and pushing some borrowers closer to stress. Anyone finding repayments difficult should consider contacting their lender early and reviewing independent information on financial hardship options before arrears build.

NSW plans for powered vessel-free zones at selected Port Stephens beaches this summer are a timely reminder that boat ownership decisions are shaped by more than purchase price, interest rates and fuel costs. For buyers comparing vessels for family trips, fishing, towing or personal watercraft use, local access rules can affect how often a boat is used and whether a chosen model suits the waterways that matter most. - read more
